FROM THE LIBERTARIAN PARTY:
Iran revelation exposes Bush administration’s
war mongering
Libertarian Party says report illuminates dangerous problems
of Bush’s foreign policy
Quick Quotes:
Shane Cory, Executive Director, Libertarian Party
• «The President’s policy of ‘shoot first and ask questions later’ nearly pushed America into yet another war with a country for erroneous reasons.»
• «The question the President now faces is how much credibility the United States government has left with respect to its foreign policy.»
Vice Admiral Michael Colley, USN, [Ret.], Libertarian National Committee At-Large Member
• «The President has done little to lead this country as a Commander in Chief.»
• «Never in my service in the United States Navy did I enter into a national security or military situation without knowing every detail available, as any competent commander should.»
Washington, D.C. – The Libertarian Party’s call for prudence in foreign policy has been justified after a National Intelligence Estimate was released earlier this week saying Iran suspended its nuclear arms program in 2003. «It is absolutely frightening that the President nearly plunged the United States into war for reasons that have been null and void since 2003,» says Libertarian Party Executive Director Shane Cory.
«This week’s NIE revelation has exposed dangerous problems with the Bush administration’s foreign policy,» says Cory. «The President’s policy of ‘shoot first and ask questions later’ nearly pushed America into yet another war with a country for erroneous reasons. What is it with this President that makes him so gung-ho for war that he refuses to practice prudence?»
At Tuesday’s press conference, the President emphasized his track record with diplomacy, saying he and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice were «working the phones» with other nations. The President also stated that the threat he believed Iran posed to the world still remains even after the NIE report.
«The President has done little to lead this country as a Commander in Chief,» says Vice Admiral Michael Colley, USN, [Ret.], a member of the Libertarian National Committee. «Never in my service in the United States Navy did I enter into a national security or military situation without knowing every detail available, as any competent commander should. The Bush administration should be ashamed at its lack of openness, integrity and self-restraint when taking the country to war.»
The Libertarian Party calls for non-intervention in foreign affairs, and has been a long-time opponent of the war in Iraq. The Libertarian Party believes the United States should work through diplomacy to ensure Americans are allowed to trade with all nations, and believes this is the most important requirement for peace and stability.
«The question the President now faces is how much credibility the United States government has left with respect to its foreign policy,» Cory concluded. «War is a serious matter, and apparently a matter the President has no qualms about rushing into. This is not how you lead a nation.»
