An Open Letter to America

Recently, I participated in the One.org Campaign to write to the Politicians and Members of the Mainstream Media to address the issues of poverty in the United States. The following was a letter that I wrote to the Miami Herald. This is the original letter that I intended to send. Unfortunately, some words and paragraphs had to be removed to make it short [as per the Mainstream Media].

I do not know if the Miami Herald will have the time to publish my open letter since their mail room is overflowing with letters from people writing about the same or different topics. In case the Miami Herald does not want to publish my letter, I have decided to share it with my readers.

For The Miami Herald and the Candidates for President of the USA:

I am writing to all of the candidates and the press in order to address issues that are of primary importance. While there is a war in Iraq, Poverty is Rife in America and the Politicians debate using insults and do not appear to talk about the problem.

People who are suffering such as the Indigenous People, Victims of Katrina, Rita, and Wilma are waiting for their problems to be addressed. These are the less fortunate who are at the poverty level. The Indigenous Population has the highest rates of alcoholism, school dropouts, with housing and nutrition levels that are lower than the average American Family. There are people who have suffered from the after effects of Hurricane Katrina, Rita, and Wilma with losses of homes, displacement, and indifference.

The same applies to those who have lost their homes secondary to foreclosure secondary to deceptive practices. While it is understandable that the consumer must also be responsible and read before signing, many of the practices by certain lending companies, banks, and other financial institutions were not ethical. Certain lending companies, banks, and other financial institutions did not take into consideration whether the borrower was willing or able to pay. The only important thing was the attitude of “money at all cost”.

The Insurance Companies [in its majority] practiced the same tactics.

People like George Phillies and The Libertarian Party [as well as people who want to solve the problem of poverty and other complications that are gradually bleeding an economy to death] are routinely ignored in favour of sound bites by the candidates and the press. This is not the time for sound bites. This is the time to solve the problems that affect America. I just hope that it is not too late.
