The United Nations was founded in 1945 under the lofty goals of no more wars and no more genocide after what transpired in Europe and the World during World War II. Guillermo Alvarez-Guedes [Cuban Comedian] once said that «The UN Never solved the problem of war because there were more wars since the UN was founded». While he said it as a joke, it has a serious side. I also know that the United Nations did not lift one finger to fight genocide in Cambodia and Rwanda.
On the 17th of April 1975, the Communist Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia and unleashed a reign of terror which emptied cities, destroyed families, and killed approximatly 1.7 million to 2.3 million out of the population of 7 million people. Cambodian Society was turned upside down as people disappeared for no apparent reason. The Motto of this Bloodthirsty regime was: «To keep you is no benefit. To destroy you is no loss.» Who cannot forget Tuol Sleng and Choeung Ek where people were tortured and/or executed? What did the United Nations do? They applauded Ieng Sary [one of the Khmer Rouge Spokesperson] when he declared that «more than 1 million years of history has been wiped out». The United Nations was especially delighted when he showed a film of the so called «Democratic Kampuchea». The Nightmare ended in January 1979, with Heng Semrin, Hun Sen, and Vietnam liberating Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge. Heng Semrin, Hun Sen, and Vietnam were more effective than the United Nations and the West.
Almost two decades later, on the 6th of April 1994; Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana and Burundian president Cyprien Ntaryamira were assasinated as their plane was about to land in Kigali Airport in Rwanda. The plane was struck by a surface to air missile. Almost immediatly after the assasination of Burundian president Cyprien Ntaryamira and Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana, Rwanda went on a killing spree with an estimated 800,000 people in Rwanda killed in two months. The United Nations again did nothing. The troops of the United Nations just sat around doing nothing because the Secretary General urged no interference. The West was indifferent as well but the United Nations did a terrible job in doing nothing in Rwanda. Even Kofi Annan [Ex Secretary General of the United Nations] admitted that the «United Nations could have done more».
The United Nations is not an effective organization. The United Nations is a bureaucracy that did not even stand up to Bush to prevent the invasion of Iraq. The time has come to give the United Nations a dignified ending [via a legalized and formal dissolution] since it did not accomplish its mission.
