Missouri Newspaper Endorses Phillies for Libertarian Primary
The editorial panel of the Rolla Daily News in Rolla, Missouri, announced today that it endorses George Phillies for the Libertarian nomination for President. The Rolla Daily News, which serves a community of over 13,000, also endorsed candidates from the Democratic Party and the GOP.
«It’s almost unprecedented for a newspaper to endorse a candidate in a third-party Presidential primary,» said Phillies 2008 Press Director Carolyn Marbry, «So we are truly grateful that the Rolla Daily News endorsed George Phillies.»
The article, available in full at
http://www.therolladailynews.com/articles/2008/02/02/editorials/edit02.txt, summarizes some of Phillies’ stands:
Abortion: We «should not encourage or discourage abortion,» according to Phillies’ Web site, meaning he favors a woman’s right to choose.
Iraq war: «There is only one good time to end the war in Iraq,» Phillies writes on his Web page, «Already…. End the War on Iraq and bring our troops home to defend America.»
Gun rights: People should have «the right to keep and bear arms, in defense of person…»
Notables: «Uncle Sam is 9 trillion dollars in debt. In Fiscal 2006, the on-budget Federal Budget Deficit was $484 billion. General Accounting Office simulations show that by 2040 interest on the national debt will consume the bulk of Federal taxes. If we go on like this, we will become a third-world banana republic.»
We realize that newspapers preparing editorial endorsements may find it challenging to find information abut third party candidates. We call your attention to Ron Gunzberger’s excellent Politics1 web site, including the listing http://politics1.com/p2008.htm which includes Green, Libertarian, and other third party candidates.
