I am reading about the threats to Avram Grant and his wife on the BBC Sports Website. Avram Grant is the coach for the Chelsea Football Club who replaced Jose Mourinho after his resignation. The threats were in the form of Anti Semitic Remarks with the presence of powder in the letter and the envelope. The letter was open by one of the members of the Chelsea Football Club Staff and commented about a “slow and painful death for Grant and his wife”. The police in Surrey [where the incident took place] have initiated an investigation.

 

The police deserve credit for initiating the investigation and it is hoped that the perpetrator of this threatening behaviour is caught and punished. The staff member should not have opened the letter but should have turned it to the police. In America, there was an incident of anthrax powder sent to the offices of NBC [National Broadcasting Corporation] in New York and the person who opened the letter died of anthrax poisoning. This is a warning for those never to open suspicious letters or packages.

 

After commenting about safety and finding justice, it should be remembered [and I will continue to say this as long as racism and hooliganism persists in football [soccer] or as long as I have breath in my heart and soul] that racism and hooliganism is incompatible with football [soccer]. I support the efforts of Football [Soccer] teams, Journalists, and organizations such as Kick It Out to eradicate the cancer called Hooliganism and Racism that eats at the heart of our beloved sport.

 

I challenge those who support football [soccer] and their teams to follow the example of Thierry Henry to combat racism and hooliganism wherever it rears its ugly head. I have no patience for those who ruin our game for the sake of their personal frustrations. We must denounce acts of hooliganism and racism and those who commit such acts should be expelled permanently from games or at least receive an ASBO [Anti Social Behaviour Ordinance]. In fact, the United States of America should copy the model of Great Britain and impose ASBO [Anti Social Behaviour Ordinance] on those who ruin sport events or other events designed to enlighten, entertain, and make us forget the agonies of our daily lives albeit for a short time.
