FreeVermont.Net “200 Towns” Campaign

«Town meeting is the true Congress, the most respectable one ever assembled in the United States.» – Henry David Thoreau, Reform Papers, 1835«Secession is a thoroughly American idea, and every American’s birthright.» – Vermont Commons newspaper, 2006«Only in Vermont was the concept of a state as a self-constituted political community fully and radically tested…In this sense, Vermont was the only true American republic, for it alone had created itself.» – Peter S. Onuf, The Origins of the Federal Republic, 1983FreeVermont.Net is a self-organizing network built of, by, and for Vermonters of all political persuasions interested in advocating Vermont’s peaceable secession from the U.S. Empire through the annual town meeting process. The project is called the FREE VERMONT “200 Towns” campaign.FreeVermont.Net is looking for independence-minded citizens in each of 200 Vermont towns to collect signatures introducing a town meeting resolution with the following goal: To call on our Vermont state legislature to convene a special session to debate the question of Vermont peaceably seceding from the United States. The hope is that Vermonters will organize grassroots support for this FREE VERMONT 200 Towns resolution during the next several years, working in their own communities in their own ways, and using their own tools. FreeVermont.Net offers no prescriptions or formulas, other than the attached short guide on town meeting and secession. A recent 2006 UVM poll indicates that 38,000 Vermonters believe that the Green Mountain State should take steps to peaceably secede from the United States. FREE VERMONT will work to put this question to our elected officials through Vermont’s time-honored town meeting process. When you and your neighbors are ready, please feel free to join FreeVermont.Net by e-mailing volunteer@freevermont.net.Is your town missing?
