Good Afternoon ,

ACTION ITEMS

We are tracking the following bills (amongst others) and hope you will take appropriate action against/for them. You can do so easily by contacting your state legislator. An easy way to find out who they are is via www.congress.org.

ELIMINATION OF TRI-RAIL: There is a bill we should vote against, House Bill 1245 and Senate Bill 1512 which would divert funds from tourism promotion to support the ailing Tri-Rail. For our news release on this issue please check it out here: http://lpf.org/press/04092008%20Tri-Rail.pdf. Although this bill will not eliminate Tri-Rail directly, it is clear without this measure it will be the end of Tri-Rail funding over the next 2 years. Although this is a measure mostly affecting South Floridians, we can all make a difference. The authority that runs Tri-Rail has a campaign going forward getting the few riders they have to contact their legislators in support of these measures – lets counteract their efforts.

STOP LEGALIZATION OF RED LIGHT CAMERAS: House Bill 351 / Senate Bill 816. This seems counter intuative as one would think red light cameras make intersections safer, however the opposite is true. Please see our news release here: http://lpf.org/press/03192008%20Red%20Light%20Cameras.pdf

TAXPAYER PROTECTION AMENDMENT: Contact State Senator Mike Haridopolos (850-487-5056) and encourage him to introduce the Taxpayer Protection Amendment into the Senate. This measure is to limit the growth of our state budget by the growth of the state’s population plus the inflation rate. This does not stop them from making the budget smaller (which is happening this year by $5-6Billion), but it does offer a cap. You can also send a quick email to all the House & Senate members by clicking here.

SALVIA DIVINORUM BAN: The Florida House has already passed H1362 and now the Florida Senate is about to take it up with S340 and/or S1612. Salvia has some characteristics of marijunana however is not banned by the Federal government and is currently legal in Florida. This
substance has not killed anyone or even hurt anyone, yet through the unwarranted fear our government has of us injesting what we like, wants to ban it. Make your voice heard.

SAFETY BELT LAW ENFORCEMENT: Contact your Senators regarding Senate Bill S94 which would make wearing your safety belt a «first offence» whereby a law enforcement office would be able to pull you over for that infraction, whereas as right now, they cannot. They can only ticket you for not wearing a safety belt if they have pulled you over for another reason. This bill comes up every year and gets defeated every year. Let us make sure it is defeated again.

As I said earlier, we are following many other bills moving through the legislature but did not want to overwhelm you at this point. This is YOUR opportunity to have your voice heard – will you make a quick email or phone call? Simply going to www.congress.org and punching in your zip code will give you all the contact information you need for you Florida House Representative and your Florida Senator.

Roberto, if I can be of any assistance to you, please feel free to email me personally.

Sincerely,
Karl Dickey
