I’m excited about the first «Move America Independent» candidate we’re endorsing for the general election.

Independent-minded Americans want what’s best for our country, not the parties or special interests.

That’s why we founded IndependentMovement.Org — to organize our support for candidates willing to stand up to the party bosses and big money.

Meet Retired Lt. Col. Charlie Brown. Charlie is running for Congress in an important swing district (CA-04).

The district is currently run by the disgraced Republican John Doolittle machine. Doolittle — a top Lieutenant of Tom Delay — is heavily linked to both the Duke Cunningham and Jack Abramoff corruption scandals.

In 2006, Charlie decided to stand up to the machine by running against Doolittle. Charlie was given no chance to beat Doolittle in a district gerrymandered to elect only Republicans. Yet his message of standing up against the political machine — and bringing our troops home from Iraq — resonated. He shocked the political establishment by almost winning the race.

But in a way, he did win. Doolittle decided to retire this year rather than face Charlie again in 2008. The iron grip of the Doolittle political machine has started to break.

Charlie is running again in 2008 — this time he’s the favorite. Independent voters in the district will determine the outcome. So he’s going to need your help to take on the machine and swing this district in a progressive direction. A pro-war state senator from southern California has decided to move into the district (east of Sacramento) in an attempt to «keep the district in Republican hands».

We’re proud Charlie is the first general election candidate we’re endorsing.

Charlie’s resume for service is impressive. He’s a longtime veteran who served in Vietnam and the Gulf. And he’s worked for years at the local Police Department. Charlie’s son will soon be depolyed for his fifth rotation in Iraq with the Air Force.

Charlie Brown opposed the War in Iraq when it was the hardest to do so – at the beginning. He did it because he thought it was the right thing for America. We need this kind of principled leadership in Congress, so we can end this war and restore America’s credibility throughout the world.

Charlie, who is running as a Democrat, wants to create a «results caucus» in Congress – one that reaches beyond party lines and solves the problems facing our country.

He’s not interested in towing the party line or taking orders from the special interests. He wants to move America in a new, independent direction. One that bridges the old divisions and empowers ordinary Americans to decide the future of their country together.
