PRESS TV Report about Beijing Olympics: “Olympics Help Beijing Economy Grow”

Beijing officials expect the city’s gross domestic product to exceed $145 billion this year with the help of the upcoming Olympic Games.

GDP is expected to break the 1-trillion-yuan mark ($146.2 billion) this year thanks to the Olympic Games, Xinhua quoted Deputy Director of Beijing’s Municipal Development and Reform Commission (BMDRC) Wang Haiping as saying on Sunday.

The Games have boosted Beijing’s economy and helped the city achieve sound and fast economic development, Wang added.

In 2007, the city’s GDP grew 12.3 percent to stand at 900 billion yuan, almost doubling in the six years since it won the bid to host the Games. From 2001 onwards, Beijing’s annual GDP growth has stood at an average of12.4 percent.

According to Wang, GDP per capita, which has more than doubled during the past six years, would continue to grow this year and surpass $8,000 dollars.

The Olympic Games have injected new life into Beijing’s economy, as they have led to greater investment in the city’s infrastructures, a cleaner environment and higher living standards.

This is while Chinese economists generally agree that the Beijing economy will not experience major fluctuations after the Olympics.
