The Tottenham Hotspurs is one of the biggest football clubs in the London Area along with Chelsea and Arsenal. The Tottenham Hotspurs are also known as the Spurs and are located at the White Hart Lane Area of London. At the present time, they are number nineteen with one point in the Barclay’s Premier League Classifications for the 2008-2009 Season. Tottenham Hotspurs started the Barclay’s Premier League with a loss to Sunderland and Middlesbrough followed by a draw against Chelsea.
The Tottenham Hotspurs had their humble beginnings in the year 1882 as a result from members of the cricket club and grammar school in a London area. The name of the club was initially the Hotspurs FC until 1884 when it adopted its present name. Before converting into a professional club in 1895, The Spurs [which is their other name] defeated Arsenal and St. Albans. Of course, the game against Arsenal lasted 15 minutes with the game called off secondary to «darkness» and with the Spurs leading 2-1.
The road traveled by the Spurs was not an easy one with occasional losses and victories as well as constant changes in location and uniform. The Spurs finally settled in White Hart Lane in 1899 and won their first Championship in the South League in 1900. In 1901, the Spurs become the first Non League Club to win the FA Challenge Cup. After that victory, there were subsequent promotions to the Second Division, First Division as well as relegations to the Second Division. The only exception to this state of defeats and victories within the years 1901 to 1950 was the Spurs victory over the Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in the year 1921.
The years after 1950 were nice to the Spurs with the exception of a relegation to the Second Division in 1977. The Spurs won the Football League Championships, the Football League Cup, the UEFA Club as well as having the honour of being the First Club from England to have played three major European Finals in 1974. It was also in the period after 1950 that Jimmy Greaves made history in 1963 by becoming the highest scorer for the Spurs with 37 goals in one season. The times changed and the Spurs were at the centre of the changes by becoming one of the first professional football [soccer] teams to float shares in the London Stock Exchange in 1983. The Spurs also celebrated their 100th anniversary in 1982.
Many players came and went but the people would support the Spurs and participate in its 125th anniversary in 2007. The Spurs have returned the favour and thanks by participating in the local communities with programmes for children, prospective players, and prospective coaches. The next match by the Spurs will be on the fifteenth of September 2008 against Aston Vila. I would like to wish them the best in their match.
