FA To Punish Drogba?

It appears that Didier Drogba is in trouble with the FA and with the law. Drogba’s current trouble started with the Carling Cup Game between Chelsea and Burnley. What has been the crime committed by Drogba?

He hurled a coin and did a gesture with one finger into the section of Burnley supporters during match in which Chelsea lost to Burnley. Mr. Drogba has already apologized for the incident stating that it was the «heat of the moment». The FA and the Burnley supporters have not been forgiving.

Drogba and Chelsea have been given until the date of the 17th of November 2008 for a response. A hearing about the incident has been scheduled for the 18th of November 2008. There has been a similar incident when Jamie Carragher received a three game ban and a red card in the year 2002. Carragher was also fired by his team Liverpool FC because of the incident.

Frank Lampard [who is Drogba’s Teammate] has suggested to him about avoiding a ban. The reasons given by Mr. Lampard have been that a «wrong message could be sent» and that people in the stadiums could throw missiles or anything that is a projectile. Regardless, he stated that it was the decision of the FA to determine punishment.

Luis Felipe Scolari who is the coach of the Chelsea FC has not made any declarations and states that he will wait for the reports from the Police, Burnley, and the FA. Burnley is conducting an investigation of what happened to see if any of their supporters had provoked Drogba.

The FA has strict rules about missiles [which includes coins] being thrown at players and the general public. They also have the power to impose life time bans if there is evidence. At the present time, the people who are involved in the incident at the Carling Cup should look at the videos of the players and the public and take appropriate measures.

It pains the underwriter to see Chelsea FC subjected to this form of injustice since he is a supporter. In spite of being a Chelsea Supporter, the underwriter also believes that the FA should work with Chelsea and Burnley to determine a punishment that would be fair to both teams and that would include the general public. If there are any signs of throwing projectiles from the bleachers or from the game site, there should be bans and expulsions for both the athlete and the fans.

These are only suggestions and the ultimate authority lies with the FA.
