Russell Latapy: His Life and Career

Russell Latapy was a Midfielder who is now the coach of the Trinidad and Tobago National Football [Soccer] Team. Russell Latapy is an institution in Trinidad and Tobago who deserves to be mentioned for his more than two decade career.

Russell Latapy was born in Port of Spain in Trindad and Tobago on the 2nd of August 1968 and has been formidable in football [soccer] since he started playing in the under 10 group. He once had the opportunity to attend Florida International University in Miami Florida in 1987 but opted for a career in football [soccer].

His career in football [soccer] took him to places such as Portugal and Scotland as well as the 2006 World Cup in Germany. He played for teams such as Trintoc, Portmore United, Academia de Coimbra, Boavista FC, Hibernian, Rangers, Dundee United, and Falkirk. During his career of nearly two decades, he managed to score ninety one goals within four hundred and eighty eight appearances.

He also had an illustrious career with the National Team of Trinidad and Tobago since 1988 with twenty nine goals in seventy five appearances, His best games were the Trinidad and Tobago Game against Honduras in 1988 during a World Cup Qualifying Match as well as the 2006 World Cup.

In one of the qualifying matches for the 2006 World Cup, he scored for Trinidad and Tobago in their game against Guatemala. It was the goal that helped Trinidad and Tobago defeat Guatemala 3-2. He also was instrumental in the island nation’s victory against Bahrein 1-0 with his goal. It was this victory against Bahrain that helped Trinidad and Tobago secure a berth for the 2006 World Cup.

Even though he played for a short time in Trinidad and Tobago’s game against Paraguay and lost, he returned home with other players as a hero. Russell Latapy was awarded one of the highest honours of his country which is the Chaconia Medal. One of his last games was against Cuba in which Trinidad and Tobago defeated Cuba 3-0 for the FIFA 2010 World Cup Classifications in 2008.

Afterwards, he retired and was inducted in the Falkirk FC Hall of Fame and became a coach of the National Football [Soccer] Team of Trinidad and Tobago. He has been an inspiration to future generations of footballers or soccer players and deserves to be mentioned so that others could see his greatness.
