Maggie Rodriguez of CBS 4 Wants End to Celibacy In Live Interview

CBS  Reporter Maggie Rodriguez admitted that there should be an end to «rigid» celibacy in light of the Father Alberto Cutie Scandal. She made this admission during an interview with Father Thomas Williams who is the CBS Religious Corresondent.

She further confessed being a long time friend of Father Albert Cutie and that he officiated at her niece’s wedding. While respecting the rights of Maggie Rodriguez to report the story that continues to evolve, this is an example of irresponsibility on the part of CBS  and Maggie Rodriguez.

Maggie Rodriguez should have either remained silent about her opinion and her personal knowledge of Father Albert Cutie since the story could be tainted with a conflict of interest. Since Ms. Rodriguez did not do either, she should have excused herself from the story.

The underwriter may have his opinion of what is happening but recognizes that in order for a story to have validity, all sides must be presented. This is not only the basics in writing but is the staple for journalism including citizen journalism. There has to exist integrity and no conflict of interest in reporting.

In order to avoid problems, it is also great if the person reveals his or her bias if they have one before writing the story. In this case, the underwriter is driven by this story in an attempt to ignite debate about celibacy and so that the readers can form their own opinions when it comes to controversial stories.

There have been people in Miami Florida who talk about a soap opera like situation. But again, this story has to be reported for what has been mentioned in previous paragraphs. It is hoped that Ms. Rodriguez would be invited to an interview with Now Public. Whether she accepts is another thing.
