Personal Reflection About Father Alberto Cutie

The City of Miami Florida and the US Latin Community finished the first full week of May 2009 with profound division over the scandal of Father Alberto Cutie and Ruhamma Cannalis.

While the story has been circulating around the world, the fact that Miami Florida and the US Latin Community lived out a soap opera. It has also reinforced the opinion of the underwriter with regards to soap operas which is that those who love drama are destined to live it out in real life.

At the present time, it is difficult and painful to reconcile the fact that Cutie was in love for the last ten years which were 1999 to 2009. It was also during this period that he hosted radio and television shows in Telemundo [a US Latin Station], EWTN, and Radio Pax [A Catholic Station in Florida].

Father Alberto Cutie also appeared in a Reality TV Show produced and recorded by Telemundo called “Cenicienta” or Cinderella as the Spiritual Guide. “Cenicienta” was about a single mother attempting to find a suitable husband for her and a suitable father for her daughter. The programme was a total failure.

His programmes were popular throughout the world and his contact with the youth galvanized the Catholic Church. All of it appears to have vanished like thin air. Cutie has done more damage to his ministry and to the Catholic Church. He has also revived the debate about celibacy.

Cutie, and his girl friend Ruhamma Cannelis has been the subject of satire and comments of a derogatory nature. The only thing that occurs to the underwriter is the damage that could be inflicted on the adolescent son of Ms. Cannelis.

While Cutie is human and there may be a need for changes in the rules of celibacy in the Catholic Church, he violated the sacred trust between a priest and his parishioners living a double life and denying it.

Ms. Cannelis should have thought about her son before even thinking about flirting with Father Cutie. The reason is that her son is now in the phase of transition between childhood and adulthood called the teen years. The teen years have never been simple but are more complicated in the 21st Century.

The Television programmes of Friday Night were filled with satires about a priest and his lover. The America Teve [http://americateve,com ] TV Series “Pellizcame Que Estoy Son~nando” [Pinch Me, I Must Be Dreaming] used Cutie and his girlfriend as a punching bag for their jokes.

America Teve is a US Latin TV Show based in Hialeah, Florida and their comedy programmes are merciless in their satire. In other words, the satire reminded the underwriter of Tiswas mixed with the Benny Hill Show [two popular TV Show in Great Britain during the 1970’s].

Jaime Bayly [a Peruvian Author, and Journalist] made fun of the pair during his nightly show broadcast on the US Latin TV Station Mega 22. The programme is broadcast to the whole world via Internet. In one part pf his monologue, he crossed the line when he suggested that Teresa Rodriguez of Univision Network “do an interview with Cutie in the beach”.

I want to condemn the comments by Bayly as an offence to female journalists who do their work with pride and have gone far and beyond the call of duty.

The inappropriate comments by Bayly was in response to the interview that Father Alberto Cutie had with Univision Network. Before concluding, Univision Network did the right thing in releasing the interview with Cutie and reveal him for what he was.

Of course Cutie has many options although he should have left the priesthood instead of embarking on his double life. There are unconfirmed rumours that he may go to the Anglican Episcopalian Church or other Christian Churches.

It would be doubtful that he could regain the lost trust by going to another church since it would be seen as an opportunistic move. It is better to finish the story with this reflection and let time heal everything.
