The political crisis in Guatemala appears to have deepened. The opposition to President Alvaro Colom presented a petition to the country’s Congress. The petition which is 35.000 strong demands that Colom be stripped of his immunity from prosecution.

Luis Perez Alvarez who is one of the organizers of the petition states that his motive is justice and denies any plots to bring down the government. The FBI and a UN backed commission created to investigate corruption in Guatemala have added this case to their list of investigations that are pending.

The EU, Rio Group, and the OAS [Organization of American States] have expressed their concern with the representatives of the EU and the OAS visiting the country. The representatives also met with Mr. Colom who has denied any wrongdoing and asks why someone «would make a recording of such allegations».

There was one detail about the video, Mr. Rosenberg recorded his video in which he stated he might be killed because he represented Khalil Musa. Khalil Musa was a businessman in Guatemala who was killed with his daughter in March 2009.

It appears that the situation is not going to resolve that easily.
