It was on the 1st of June 2009 at 8:00 AM EST, that the giant of the automotive industry GM Filed for bankruptcy. The reasons have been mismanagement, debt, and the economic crisis. The decision to file for bankruptcy leaves the door open for the Federal Government to receive a majority ownership and reduce the company in a way that it can sustain itself economically.
No one ever thought that they would live to see the day that General Motors would one day end up with such dire predicaments. It was inevitable since General Motors was unable or unwilling to change with the times. The company lived with the mentality that Detroit, Michigan was the motor capital of the world when the world actually left Detroit a long time ago.
General Motors forgot that the consumers as well as the United States of America have changed their taste in cars. There were also quotas and pressure to finish jobs, requirements, and there were no questions asked. The management refused to budge on any of their demands or requirements even though the company was bleeding.
The management also blamed the labour unions for their problems and complained about excessive government regulations as well as the «excessive demands of the labour unions». Afterwards, the GM Management was unable to resolve its crisis of declining revenue with declining sales. It asked for the intervention of the government.
The labour unions of the United States of America were also to blame with their demands. It is understandable that they wanted their demands to be met. Yet the Labour Unions of the United States of America were plagued by the same mentality of the 1950’s and the blame game. When the fortunes of the labour unions were in the bottom, they did not examine their leadership.
Instead, the labour unions blamed «foreigners» for taking «jobs from Americans». They made fake accusations against China, India, and other countries for «taking away jobs from Americans» while these nations had a professional class, and a work ethic that has left the United States of America a long time ago secondary to the excess of state and the constant bickering between management and labour unions.
The Labour Unions and Management could not accept the fact that Detroit and other cities in the Industrial Midwest limited themselves to industry concepts that were feasible in the 1950’s.
They could not accept the loss of Detroit, Cleveland, Akron, and other industrial areas to other areas. The author could say this since he was born in Ohio and lived there. He is talking from experience.
When it is not blaming foreigners for their plight, they would blame «capitalists» for their plight. It is easy to point the finger of blame and ask for government intervention. They wanted the government to step in, now they have it.
The Federal Government will now control General Motors in a way that many reporters from FOX News use the term Government Motors. It is not known what will transpire at the present time.
The wheels of history have taught humanity that a government run industry has a tendency to fail. Most of them operate on bureaucracy and the people who work in such industries are also involved in quotas. There will be people who will think twice before investing in a government run industry whether it be buying stock or buying the products.
For those who want to think of this as a Republican Diatribe, the underwriter is a Libertarian who believes that the state should be separated from business, education, religion, and personal life. Unfortunately, the Libertarians have not had their voice heard in this all too important news segment.
