Commentary:
The arrest of an elderly couple under charges of spying for Castro’s Cuba sent shockwaves throughout the city of Miami Florida. There were people who were asking the questions as to the reasons while others were condemning it.
There are many reasons which should be discussed as to why people commit the oldest and yet odious profession in the history of the human race. They can be grouped into four categories such as Alienation, Monetary, Ideology, Society, and Free Choice
- Alienation
Jesus Christ once said that a man is not a Prophet within his family and less in his country. There are people who have lived and worked in the same places during their lifetime while others have moved from place to place in search of opportunities only to have them crushed.
The people who have a sense of alienation come from different social, religious, and ethnic backgrounds and are those who have suffered marginalization in their place of work, birth, and/or place of residence.
The final straw in the majority of these cases have been the sense that others who are less worthy of a promotion or praise receive it. Another factor in the final straw is being bypassed for a promotion or an increase in salary in favour of someone who is well connected but less capable of doing the job.
There have been cases of people who worked tirelessly for their country, state, place of residence, and schools without a desire for praise but have received criticism from ungrateful people.
- Monetary
The reasons why people choose Espionage have been monetary. Monetary and Alienation are like a couple that go hand in hand and feed off each other. The person who chooses this route has financial problems and has felt bypassed in promotions. Even the promotions are not enough since the sense of money and alienation is all ready deeply ingrained in the individual.
One of the infamous examples of the two above mentioned categories was a member of the US Navy in Virginia. This individual was a racist who thought “Americans should be for Americans” [i.e: White Anglo Saxons] while others were thought of as inferior. The same individual was also Anti Communist.
In the 1960’s, he felt that he was not compensated enough for his patriotism and collaborated with the Russians. The collaboration was done with his friends and it consisted in passing secrets from the US Navy to the Russians. He involved his son as well. The US Navy Employee and member was well compensated by the Russians much more than his usual work.
He started to flaunt his wealth and enjoy life to the dismay of the Russians who insisted in that the money be kept in Russia in a special fund should he decide to live there. The Russians also advised him in the 1980’s to prepare to move to their country. His ego was too much and his wife turned him and his friends to the US Authorities. He is currently serving a life sentence.
- Ideology
There are people who believed in the concepts that they were spying for. An example of this was the elderly couple that was arrested for spying for Castro’s Cuba. Their diaries helped give them the guilty verdict since it was filled with praise for Castro’s Government and hatred for the USA.
It reminds people of how Jane Fonda and other Hollywood people went to North Vietnam to torment the POW’s from their same country. It also reminds people of how Julia Roberts and others have done the same thing to the point that Hollywood is no longer looked as a serious contender in the entertainment field.
- Society
While Cuba had an identity before the Castros and Venezuela had one before Chavez, the USA was a country based on God, Diversity, and Individual Opportunities. It was not a real country but a place founded on ideals. People identified themselves by their city, county, state, and ethnic group followed by the country.
What kept the USA together was the concept of God, Diversity, and Individual Opportunities and the three went into the trash can. What replaced it were immorality, violence, and the belief “If It Feels Good Do It”. While Hollywood has offered examples, the education system in America [the majority] has offered the same thinking.
The end result was the presence of John Walker Lindh a US Citizen who was a combatant for the Taliban.
- Free Choice
Pope John Paul II during his visit to Cuba in 1998 told the people that they are masters of their own destiny. The same applies for people who engage in spying. They chose such a field when they could have faced life forward.
Lessons To Be Learned
If people are frustrated with their lot in life, they should strive to improve it. If they are not content with their work or place of residence, they should take the time to prepare themselves for an eventual exit from the place and no return. It is more dignified than espionage.
Those who have engaged in it should be expelled from the country and area that they were spying against or sent to jail..
