For the first time since it defeated Italy in the 1966 World Cup, North Korea has qualified for the 2010 World Cup. The events that lead to this historic event in soccer history has been a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia and a draw between South Korea and Iran.
The coach of the North Korean Football expressed praise for his team and players. He also stated that he was confident in the ability of North Korea to hold back the Saudis in their game.
While North Korea deserves to be congratulated in accomplishing this feat, they had a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia while South Korea had the same arrangement with Iran. North Korea is in 106th place with 338 points in the FIFA/Coca Cola World Ranking.
Saudi Arabia is in 56th place with 568 points while Iran is in 52nd place with 587 points. South Korea is 46th place with 654 points. North Korea appears to have its work cut out for it. It remains to be seen what will transpire if the two Koreas face each other in South Africa.
In one of their last games, North Korea accused South Korea of poisoning its players. There were also other requests by North Korea for neutral grounds in order to play football. It is hoped that the two Koreas can keep politics away from the 2010 World Cup since it is a time for football lovers to enjoy their favourite sport.
