After the initial game of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup between South Africa and Iraq which produced no goals, Spain and New Zealand played their first game in Group A. The game took place in the South African town of Rustenberg. It was predicted that Spain would win especially after its Euro Cup 2008 Victory over Germany.
Spain is currently in first place in the FIFA/ Coca Cola Ranking with 1761 points compared to New Zealand which is in 82nd place with 431 points. During the match, Spain dominated the field and the game with their consistency as well as discipline. New Zealand appeared to be surprised and unable to launch a counterattack against such a powerful opponent.
Fernando Torres started the first half by scoring the first goal in six minutes for Spain. This was courtesy of receiving the ball inside the area of his fellow countryman Cesc Fabregas. He then proceeded to kick the ball with the lower half of his right foot into the left portion of the goal net.
The goal keeper for New Zealand whose name was Glen Moss was unable to block the ball and it was the first goal for Spain.
It was the beginning of a humiliating game for New Zealand which would damage any chances it may have to classify within the Asian Football Confederation. Torres did not stop with the first goal at six minutes as he continued punishing New Zealand with two more goals in fifteen and seventeen minutes.
Fernando Torres scored his second goal with a direct kick and the third goal with his head. The punishment did not stop with Torres as Cesc Fabregas and Albert Riera continued to attempt another goal. Riera attempted in twenty two minutes but was blocked by Moss. Fabregas then surprised Moss with a third goal in twenty four minutes.
Within twenty five minutes of the first half, Spain continued to defend its gains while the South Africans quickly adopted Torres as one of their own. New Zealand attempted to play an aggressive game but was unable to contain the Spanish advance. At the end of the first half, Spain dominated the 2009 Confederations Cup Game against New Zealand with a 4 to 0 lead.
The second half was a continuation of the first half but Spain added another point with a goal by David Villa increasing the total to five points. New Zealand was unable to recover or let alone attempt to score in this all important game for both teams. It was too much for New Zealand as Spain emerged as the victor.
The classification for Group A on the 14th of June 2009 was Spain leading with three points, Iraq with one point, South Africa with one point, and New Zealand with zero points. The most valued player of the game was Fernando Torres secondary to his rapid fire goals within the first twenty minutes of this very important game.
