In another exclusive interview, it is a pleasure and an honour to have invited the Libertarian Party with Kent Mc Millan who is the Public Relations Chair with the Libertarian Party of Illinois.
The topics discussed were the War On Drugs and what can be done for America
1. Why has the War On Drugs been a failure and why does Kirk insist that such a war works?
Response: The war on drugs has been a failure mainly because there is a certain segment of the population that wants to take drugs and the fact that it is illegal has not stopped them. Since there is this demand it provides a market for drug selling and distribution. With the amount of money in the drug business, sellers and distributors can afford weapons to ply their trade, and as we have seen, they often «out-arm» the law. Although we can’t speak for Congressman Kirk, his actions have followed the script in the war on drugs: keep spending more money, pass more and harsher laws, fill up the prisons and people will stop taking drugs. It hasn’t worked. Banning something never solves the problem.
2. What has been the total amount of money spent on the war on drugs?
Response: We don’t have the exact amount immediately at hand but it has been an obscene amount (well into the millions) with no real progress to report.
3. Recently, the Republicans and Democrats have been commenting about Iran. What is the position of the Libertarian Party with regards to Iran and other foreign conflicts?
Response: Libertarians believe in a non-interventionist foreign policy. Other nations should be left to decide for themselves how they govern their countries.
4. Why is it healthier for America to avoid being involved in such conflicts?
Response: It uses our military for the wrong reasons. We have troops stationed in way too many countries. We could use more troops on our soil defending our country. Certain countries are very resentful of our tendency to want to be the world’s policeman and if we stayed out of their business, their opinion of us would certainly change for the better.
5. Recently our country has been the witness to mundane news about Obama and a fly as well as the stimulus package. The Republicans have been making more comments about being an alternative. Has America gone soft when it comes to politics being tabloid?
Response: The party out of power feels it has to act as an alternative in the hopes that the popularity of the current president will weaken. George W. Bush was a very unpopular president and reports indicate that President Obama’s policies are becoming increasingly less popular. It just shows that government solutions to problems don’t work and the more a president tries to hone in on a person’s life, the worse things get. As to America going soft, the American people haven’t gone soft but the media feels a need to overplay a story such as the fly incident for tabloid value.
6. What can the Libertarians do to make themselves appear more visible?
Response: Keep on plugging. Since most Libertarians do not get paid, we are at a disadvantage to the well paid staffers and political consultants the D’s and R’s can employ to get their message out. The internet has helped to a degree, but we get little to no attention from the national and local media, even though we have regularly produced position papers on various topics.
7. What will happen if America continues the politics of the two headed Republican/Democratic Party?
Response: The percentage that we pay on taxes will continue to increase, our civil liberties will continue to diminish and government will increasingly become involved in our daily lives.
8. What is the Libertarian Position with regards to Gun Ownership?
Response: An individual has a right to protect himself, his home and his family, but if he uses a gun to harm another, he must pay the price.
9. What is the Libertarian Position with regard to Fiscal Stability? Is there support for a Gold and/or Silver Standard?
Response: Libertarians are fiscal conservatives and are against the increase in the national debt and increased government spending. As to gold and silver, there are a number of individual libertarians who would like to see us revert back to this system from the current paper system.
10. The Libertarian Position on Immigration?
Response: We believe in law and order but support someone coming to this country to make a better life for themselves. Unfortunately, the welfare state which exists in this country has drawn a large number of illegal immigrants.
