When the United States of America was celebrating its Independence Day on July 4 2009, the US Soccer Team was preparing for its Gold Cup Game against Grenada. The team was recovering from its second place finish in the Confederation Cup and trained for this game. The game occurred at Qwest Field in Seattle, Washington with 15, 387 fans watching it. It was also the opening game for Group B which included the USA, Honduras, Haiti, and Grenada.
The first half started with the US Soccer Team dominating the field with its discipline and tenacity. It also had the advantage of the crowd and playing in their home country. Freddy Adu scored the first goal within seven minutes after receiving the ball from Robbie Rogers. Robbie Rogers had managed to remove the ball from Ricky Charles on the midfield section of the left side. Freddy Adu just simply kicked the ball past Desmond Noel who was Grenada’s goalkeeper.
Freddy Adu scored his second international goal in his career with the first goal of this important game.
Grenada attempted an equalizer that failed with Charles attempting a 35 yard kick but it was too wide for scoring purposes. Afterwards, Holden scored the second goal by receiving the ball from Rogers. He then proceeded to kick it past Anthony Modeste [Grenada’s Captain] and Noel with a downward header within the six yard box.
Grenada suffered further when Jason James received a caution at 40 minutes. Afterwards, it appeared that they wanted to finish the first half.
The second half was characterized by the continual dominance of the US Soccer Team but fatigue started to set in. It was an attempt by the team to maintain its lead while Grenada just wanted to simply have a number in the scoreboard. Unfortunately, the dream by Grenada was not to be fulfilled.
Logan Pause was able to surprise the Grenadian team by slipping the ball past them and passing it to Robbie Rogers who managed to score the third goal within 60 minutes. Heath Pierce helped Charle Davis score the fourth goal within 68 minutes. Davis managed to score another direct kick past Noel to score his third international goal as well as this goal.
The US Soccer Team started to make some errors which lead to caution cards for Freddy Adu and Brad Evans within the last minutes of the game. Regardless, this was a shining moment for the US Soccer Team and the best gift that they could give the people of the USA on the Fourth of July.
