Jonathan Woodgate is one of the promising players in England who was born in Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, England on the 22nd of January 1980. He is currently a defender and center back for the Tottenham Hotspur otherwise known as the Spurs with the number 39.
He spent his youth playing for Middlesbrough and Leeds United before becoming a professional with the latter club.
During his times with Leeds United, he was instrumental in helping his team win the FA Youth Cup and the semi final of the UEFA Champions League. Regardless, his time with Leeds was not without incident.
In the year 2000, he was involved in a Crown Court trial with teammate Lee Bowyer. The reason was that an incident in a night club which lead to severe injuries for one of the people in the club. Mr. Woodgate was punished by a ban from the Football Association for international games. The punishment cost him dearly since he was unable to represent England in the 2002 World Cup.
In the year 2003, he signed with Newcastle United but was unable to see action because of a serious injury. Regardless, Woodgate’s finest hour was during the semi final match of the UEFA Cup 2003-2004. The time with Real Madrid was a mixed one although he became a cult hero for some of the fans.
Woodgate started his Real Madrid career in a game against Atletico Bilbao in which he scored an own goal, and received a red card for a second yellow card offense. He was able to redeem himself by scoring the first goal for Real Madrid in its UEFA Champions League game against Rosenberg.
He was unable to progress further with Real Madrid because of multiple injuries and as a result was not selected for the 2006 English squad for the World Cup. Woodgate was then chastised by the Spanish sports paper Diario Marca as the worst signing of the 21st Century. He returned to England and signed with Middlesbrough.
The radio station of Middlesbrough called Century FM voted to make him man of the match as a result of his debut against Arsenal. He also substituted for the teams Captain George Boateng when the latter was suspended. In January 2008, he was transferred to the Spurs [which is the nickname of the Tottenham Hotspur in 2008.
The time with the Spurs resulted in his first goal for the team against Chelsea so that his team could win the League Cup trophy for the first time in almost a decade. Regardless, his performance during the 2008-2009 regular season was a disaster. It appears that Jonathan Woodgate is someone who has success and failure on an intermittent scale. It remains to be seen what will transpire in the 2009-2010 season.
