Brett Favre and The Vikings

Brett Favre announced his retirement [in the beginning of 2008] from the Green Bay Packers stating that he wanted to spend time with his family. It was a noble gesture from a person who people thought deserved to retire after playing from the Green Bay Packers. It was thought that he would enjoy his family, his salary, and maybe even participate in football commentaries during the NFL Games.

During the year 2008, it appeared that Brett Favre decided to change his mind and take back his retirement. He signed with the New York Jets and started to play for them. The decision by Brett Favre to sign with the Jets was a slap in the face for the Green Bay Packers who supported him during his career.

Mr. Favre was able to defend himself during the 2008 NFL Season with the New York Jets even though they did not win the Super Bowl. After his brief comeback with the Jets, he decided that he will retire again. The people who watch the NFL refused to believe him especially those from the Green Bay Packers who felt betrayed.

The fears of the people who watch the NFL and the Green Bay packers were realized when Brett Favre announced that he will take back his retirement again and play for the Minnesota Vikings. Brett Favre has crossed the line from being a serious contender within the NFL to a frustrated has been that managed to antagonize his supporters including the ones from Green Bay.

Brett Favre was an institution for the Green Bay Packers in the same way that Dan Marino was for the Miami Dolphins. Dan Marino had the decency to refuse an offer from the Minnesota Vikings after the Dolphins refused to renew his contract. Dan Marino remained loyal to the team and city that accepted him and gave him the best in his professional career with the NFL.

Bret Favre let down the people of Green Bay who nurtured his career and supported him. The people of Green Bay are one of the few people who believe in team loyalty including players. The decision by Brett Favre to play for the Jets and Vikings undermined that sense of loyalty. It appears that Brett Favre is only loyal to one person Brett Favre.

It is this ego that leads Favre to continue playing when fellow football players are enjoying their retirement. Whatever Favre has accomplished with Green Bay has been erased by the reckless decision of this reckless person whose love has been more glory and more money.
