There is an abandoned theater in Baltimore Street in front of the Radisson Lord Baltimore.
It was the Morris A Mechanic Theater and it had its glory in this town. The theater was constructed in 1967 by Morris A. Mechanic who was a theater lover and an investor in real estate. The purpose of the theater was to bring life into Downtown Baltimore.
The theater has been a place where acts and plays were tried out before going to New York. With the passing of time, there was less use for the theater and the final curtain fell more than three decades later with the re opening of the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center.
There have been attempts to find other uses. One West Baltimore Street Associates acquired the property while the City of Baltimore’s Preservation Commision has declared it an historical landmark.
Regardless, the former theater is a shadow of its former self with people including gang members roaming at night.
