The Argentinian National Football [Soccer] Team was once a dominating team in the World Cup. It was at one of its highest peaks during the 1978 World Cup and the 1986 World Cup. The arrival of Diego Armando Maradona as coach was the equivalent of a sports team committing suicide. While Maradona has been praised by some circles as an eminent football [soccer] player, his efforts as coach was a disaster
The team was unable to adopt a winning strategy and was inconsistent in its plays. The result was that Ecuador, Brazil and Paraguay were able to take advantage of the vacuum left by Argentina in soccer to score and classify for the World Cup 2010. Argentina ended in fifth place in its regional standings with the possibility of a play off in order to qualify. At the time of this article, two qualifiers remain for Argentina.
The reaction of Diego Armando Maradona to the sudden loss of prestige in Argentina was to blame the head of the Argentinian Football Association [which is the National Football/Soccer Team], the technical director, the players, and everyone else except himself. Maradona has also adopted the strategy of throwing temper tantrums by threatening to resign if his demands are not met. He has even stated that he would resign even if Argentina makes it to the 2010 World Cup Finals.
Diego Armando Maradona should be taking a close look at himself and accepting responsibility for his poor coaching performance. It appears that he cannot balance being a player and then becoming a coach as Frank Rijkaard has done. The fact that he has publicized his temper tantrums and arguments with the players, technical directors, and directors of the Argentinian National Football [Soccer] Team has already exacerbated the precarious situation for Argentina in the 2010 World Cup and may have demoralized the team.
It is hoped that the Argentinian National Football/Soccer Team can find a way to resolve its impasse with Maradona. If Maradona was a man of dignity, he should have submitted his resignation a long time ago. He can write his autobiography, become host of a talk show, and visit his friends the Castro Brothers and company in Cuba.
The Argentinian National Football/Soccer Team also has the right to call Maradona’s bluff by accepting his resignation or even terminating his job. The reason would be poor performance and the loss of prestige of the team thanks to the elected son Diego Armando Maradona. Whether this will occur is a different story.
