FIFA has decided to launch an disciplinary hearing against Diego Armando Maradona for his abusive outbursts filled with expletives on live television. FIFA will hold the meeting on the 15th of November to decide his fate.
FIFA will base its investigation under Article 58 of its disciplinary code which could suspend Maradona for «at least five matches, a stadium ban, and 20,000 Swiss Francs».
Julio Grondona who is the head of the Argentine Football Association has accused Maradona’s opponents and FIFA of blowing things out of proportion. Mr. Grondona has promised that Maradona will not repeat the scene again.
Maradona has commented during an interview with one of the radio stations in Argentina that he has nothing to apologize for. It appears that Maradona as well as Grondona is in denial of the problem which is Maradona.
Maradona has done nothing more than to damage the Argentine National Football [Soccer] Team with his behavior. If another manager or player were to behave in the same fashion as Maradona, he or she would have been banned under the statutes of Article 58 of the FIFA Code of Conduct.
While Maradona may receive credit and glory for his part in the history of football [soccer], it should not be denied that his personal life including the drug laden ones as well as his arrogance has done more damage to his legacy, the legacy of football [soccer], and to his team.
It also appears that Argentina is willing to forgive him but that does not resolve the problem. In fact, the Maradona problem has been festering for a long time. His insults toward Pele and Messi are not practical jokes. It is an attitude that is based on Maradona trying to play God.
If reincarnation were to exist, we can say that Maradona was the reincarnation of Henry VIII, Louis XIV, or even other megalomaniacs such as Stalin. It is not intended for political purposes. The comparison is based on personalities. The following comments written by the underwriter was not based on envy or rivalry.
The underwriter was once a supporter of Maradona and used to hang his posters. What happened was that the use of drugs plus his insulting remarks to every living thing is unbecoming of a person who is a sports figure.
It is hoped that the disciplinary committee of FIFA decides to punish Maradona for his actions and insults. It is also hoped that the Argentine Football [Soccer] Association comes to its senses and expels Maradona as a coach since he refuses to resign.
If the underwriter was a member of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, he would ban Maradona for life and send him off on his way to write his autobiography.
