FIFA [and this was going to happen] rejected the request of the Republic of Ireland for a rematch. The reason was that a result and the ruling of a referee cannot be reversed. FIFA added that if a replay was allowed, every nation would be asking for one.
FIFA left the door open to an exception which would be France asking for a replay.
The French Football [Soccer] Federation has decided not to ask for a replay with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Ireland and France disagreeing about what transpired in the game.
Giovanni Trapattoni who is the manager of the Republic of Ireland team recognizes that a replay is impossible but that there will have to be a special reunion to resolve the issue of referees and rulings in order to ensure fair play.
The governments of both Ireland and France must remember that sports must be separated from politics. They should also understand that the government should not interfere in the football [soccer] associations unless they want FIFA to ban them from the sport.
There should also be an investigation into what has transpired in order to avoid similar incidents in the future but this would have to be decided by the Football [Soccer] Associations and FIFA.
