The disgraced football [soccer] player Zidane who is of French/Algerian origin has reignited interest in the possibility of an African Country winning the 2010 World Cup. The 2010 World Cup is to be held in South Africa and it is a source of pride for the African people in the continent as well as the diaspora.

Zidane reignited interest interest in an interview that he gave to France Football [which is a football/soccer magazine]. During the interview, he expressed his interest in helping «Algeria advance to the semifinals against [Group C] opponents England and the United States of America.

While conceding that «Spain and Brazil may win the World Cup», he dared to predict that maybe Algeria could surprise the world as it did during its 2010 World Cup Classification games against Egypt. Algeria is not the only country that will be playing in the 2010 World Cup. South Africa [as host] as well as Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, and the Ivory Coast are also participating.

The possibility of each country winning the World Cup is a big possibility although Algeria will have a difficult time against England in Group C. The reason is that England is the strongest in the Group with multiple entries in previous World Cups as well as an organized and disciplined team.

South Africa in its position as the host nation will start the 2010 World Cup playing against Mexico. It is the opinion of the underwriter that South Africa will defeat Mexico, France, and Uruguay easily and advance from Group A into the semi finals. South Africa will then face teams that may be weaker or stronger.

South Africa has the willpower as well as the discipline and tenacity in its team. It has also benefited from the experience of coaches from Brazil who have shown South Africa its form of football [soccer]. South Africa is willing to learn and have taken their football [soccer] a notch higher. The conclusion is that South Africa is the African country with the biggest possibility of winning the 2010 World Cup.

Nigeria is in Group B with Argentina, Greece, and the Republic of Korea [otherwise known as South Korea. Nigeria will easily defeat Greece and take advantage of the infighting within the Argentine National Football [Soccer] team to hand Argentina a humiliating defeat. The match between Nigeria and Argentina is more than just a match, it has become personal after the Argentine coach Maradona insulted everyone including Nigeria during his Press Conference following Argentina’s victory over Uruguay.

Nigeria may face its opponent South Korea and this is expected to be a tough match but Nigeria will survive it to advance although it will not be enough to win the 2010 World Cup unless there are weaker opponents in the semi finals. Nigeria has the added advantage of being a well disciplined, organized, and consistent team that has the desire to play and play to win.

Ghana is in Group D against Germany, Serbia, and Australia. If Ghana defeats all three of its opponents, it will be a miracle. Cameroon is one of the greatest teams from Africa to play and they are in Group E. Cameroon will defeat Japan and Denmark but will lose to Holland.

The Ivory Coast is in the Group of Death called Group G with Brazil, Portugal, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea [North Korea]. While the Ivory Coast may defeat North Korea, it is no match against Brazil and Portugal with Brazil winning Group G and advancing to the semifinals.

The conclusion is that South Africa and Nigeria are the two African countries that have a big possibility of winning the 2010 World Cup.
