The Togolese National Football Team was due to participate in the African Cup Of Nations Tournament. The first game was to be against Ghana in the province of Cabinda. What has happened is that the Togo National Football Team was ambushed and shot with machine guns by unknown assailants.
The Angolan Governemt has condemned the attack and has stated that it was an «act of terrorism». Regardless, they have stated that the games will continue in Cabinda. Cabinda is part of Angola but is separated by the rest of the country by a small extension of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Cabinda has been the focal point of groups wanting independence from Angola. One of the players from Manchester City [Emanuel Abdemayor] was in the bus but was «shaken not injured». The Togolese Football Federation reports that the driver of the National Team’s bus has died.
While Angola has stated that the games will continue, Aleixys Romao [Midfielder] has talked about the need for Togo to withdraw from the tournament if the security issues are not addressed. It remains to be seen what will transpire and Now Public will receive further information.
