Angola Arrests Assailant Of Attack On Togo National Football Team

The government of Angola announced the arrest of two people involved in the attack on the Togo National Football [Soccer] Team. According to the Angolan Government, the attacks were the responsibility of FLEC [Liberation Front for the Enclave of Cabinda].

FLEC has been fighting for an independent Cabinda since the Angolan Civil War of the 1970’s. Rodrigues Mingas declared that «FLEC was responsible» and that his group wanted to attack the soldiers and not the players». He concluded that «this is war, these things happen, and it is the beginning».

There were other members of FLEC who deny the attack and stated that this «was an attempt to sabotage the peace process». Regardless, the nation of Togo has decreed three days of national mourning and one of the players has been hospitalized secondary to the attack.

The sports world should condemn this attempt to mix politics with sports. The Togo National Football [Soccer] Team went to play in the African Cup of Nations and did not deserve to be ambushed. The host country should have also established precautions in these cases like other countries do.

It is hoped that the Togo National Football [Soccer] Team makes a speedy recovery.
