The world knows about the Tiger Woods scandal which might have ended his marriage and career. The Press Conference that Tiger Woods gave is now history but has become a conversation piece among the people.
I did not want to write about the Press Conference but there was no alternative after ESPN started to interview every sports personality concerning it. The next and important factor in writing an article about Tiger Woods was to take into account a silent majority.
The opinion of the silent majority is that there are people who could care less. While Tiger Woods made a bad decision on his personal life, he should have resolved this problem without the world looking as voyeurs.
The timimg was also terrible since the Press Conference has received more news coverage than the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver or the PGA Golf Tours. The fact that people paid more attention to the declarations of Tiger Woods than to the other two sporting events is a reflection of our society as voyeurs.
It appears that we invent idols, expect perfection from them, do everything [such as finding a flaw] to see them fall, and then devour them after they have fallen. It is something that has happened with sports personalities, movie stars, and politicians. The pattern that was mentioned is a disgrace to all of us.
The only exception to the rule was the wise decision of the golf writers to boycott the Tiger Woods Press Conference. The venerable sport of golf [which has given the world people such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Seve Ballesteros] does not deserve to have its good name blemished by what happened to Tiger Woods.
The lesson that should be learned is the following: we should not demand more from our idols when we are humans. The world has had share of idols in every profession including sports only to see them fall. I remember once idolizing O.J.Simpson and Diego Maradona only to see them fall before my own eyes.
The idols fall because they [like us] are human beings with defects. They fall because of our unrealistic expectations and their desire to fulfill them. We should not invent idols and expect more from them when we cannot comply with our own unrealistic expectations.
We should not judge others by the mistakes we make since those who judge eventually will be judged themselves. It is often wandered what would happen to the children of Tiger Woods after all of the publicity. It is hoped that they will be able to live a normal childhood after what we have done.
We should leave Tiger Woods alone for the sake of the children of the golfer
