Willie Nelson once sang about going «on the road again». I am now on the road again interviewing nominees for the Texas Music Awards. The next artists on the road is Brenda Kay.
Brenda Kay is a Texas Singer who has been nominated for the Texas Music Awards in the category of Female Vocalist of the Year 2010. It has been a pleasure to converse with one of the living legends of Texas.
1. How did you get started in music?
I was singing before I could talk… I loved the spotlight whether it was atop a picnic table or at the community theatre.
2. What were your musical inspirations?
Many of my family members play intruments and everybody sings! At Christmas, we would all gather and sing carols with 3 part harmonies. I love those memories.
3. How were you able to use your musical inspirations in order to form a style that is Brenda Kay? I write and sing what come natural to me. It doesnt take much effort when I sit down to write. I was raised with country music on the radio so I feel like it runs in my blood. My songs show the real BK because they are about me and my feelings. They are my diary on a CD.
4. What was the inspiration behind recording «Dirts Still Red»?
I have always dreamed of turning all my original songs into a full length cd. It has been a goal of mine since I was 10 years old.
5. How are you able to maintain your music down to earth? My reason for this question is that your album has great songs and the world does not have access to this type of music because of the mainstream press.
I write what is real to me and if it happend to me, more than likely, it has happend to someone else. Many people can relate to my songs. I love to reach people throught music. It has always been healing for me and when you hear the right song on the right day and it is talking about your situation…..it makes ya feel good!
6. What was your reaction when you heard that you were nominated for the TMA?
I was so humbled and honored that enough people like my voice well enough to get me nominated! Such a great feeling!
7. Your favorite color is green. Have you done anything that is green in Texas with regards to the enviornment? I am also including music as well
I participated in the 2009 TRASH OFF in Abilene tx. This is where local musicians gather to pick up trash around the town and keep Abilene beautiful!
8. You have lived in North Dakota. Has North Dakota been an inspiration for some of your music?
Some of my songs were written in North Dakota, but I still had all my Texas roots to base my music off of.
9. You hope to one day visit Australia. What would be your reaction if Australian TV were to invite you to perform there?
I would be very glad to share my music with Australia! I would love to share my music with anyone, anywhere, anytime. It is a gift I was giving and playing for people is how I give back.
10. You have performances in Texas. Will you be performing in the rest of the USA and the world and when?
Right now my tour schedule is just in Texas, but I would love to oppurtunity to expand throughout the US and across the world! Anywhere there is a Texas country music fan!
11. What are your recommendations for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
Don’t let the negative people get you down!!! There are so many negative people and obsticles that you just have to climb over. Keep a positive attitude. Play for as many people as you can and meet everyone you can in your business.
12. Where can people buy your album?
