Mexico or El Tri faced Iceland in one of the friendly games before the 2010 World Cup. The place where the teams met was in Charlotte, North Carolina which is home to one of the extensive Mexican Populations.
The city was decked with Mexican Flags and souvenirs of the game which included T-Shirts as well as bumper stickers and banners of the team and its players. The adults took their children to the game which included a party dedicated to Mexican Culture and Food.
The pundits predicted an easy win of 2 to 0 in favor of Mexico The FIFA Coca Cola Rankings for Mexico in the month of March 2010 was 15th place with 968 points compared with Iceland and its 91st place and 355 points. The friendly game means that the statistics are not always what they seem to be.
The game itself was a test of nerves for both teams in which attempts to score a goal were blocked by their respective goalkeepers. Regardless, the game proved to be exciting with the Icelandic team doing theatrical somersaults outside of the field in order to pass the ball with their teammates.
The game was briefly interrupted when a loyal fan of the Mexican National Soccer Team breached security and ran around the field. His purpose was to show his loyalty and to say hello to one of the players. One of the players attempted to grab him but he escaped only to be tackled by security.
The members of the Icelandic Team did not miss an opportunity to photograph the incident. There were more corner kicks with other attempts to score a goal without success. Regardless, the fancy footwork was enough to entertain the crowd. Regardless, the crowd was deceived.
The result was a mere 0-0 which was not enough for the Mexican National Soccer Team hoping to prove their worth before facing Bafana Bafana [South Africa] in the first game of the 2010 World Cup
The State of North Carolina had an example of what would the World Cup be like even though this was just a friendly. Mexico should learn not to rest on its laurels if it hopes to make inroads in South Africa. I am already predicting that South Africa will be in first place in Group A followed Mexico.
