Landon Donovan who is the principal star of the US Soccer Team, and LA Galaxy has expressed a desire to play in Mexico. He confessed that he almost signed a contract with Club America which is the same club where Salvador Cabanas played before being shot in the head.
He made these declarations while being interviewed by Notimex. Mr. Donovan also talked about that playing in the Mexican League with Club America would be great for his «talents» as well as «capacity».
He also talked about how he used to play football/soccer with the US Latin Community in Los Angeles. Mr. Donovan confessed that playing in Mexico would be a «great experience» for him.He also commented about returning to Europe where he played in the English Football/Soccer Team Everton.
While it is admirable that Landon Donovan wants to play in the Mexican League and Club America, I often ask myself the question about his contact with reality. I love Mexico and their people. They also have a great football/soccer league as well as great teams such as Chivas and Club America.
The problem lies in the Mexico of today where Salvador Cabanas was shot in the Bar Bar [a popular nightclub in Mexico City].Who cannot forget what happened to Salvador Cabanas after he was shot in the head? The people thought that he would never recover. Cabanas recovered to the point that he was able to talk, move, and continue his treatment in Argentina.
While Salvador Cabanas was lucky, others have not been lucky such as the victims of the recent tragedies in Ciudad Juarez. The City of Ciudad Juarez was the scene of the assasination of 16 youths in February of 2010. It has also been the scene of the killing of certain members of the staff of the US Consulate located in the city with shares a border with El Paso, Texas.
Landon Donovan deserves the respect for bringing US Football/Soccer into the limelight. He is one of the many US Football/Soccer players who has brought publicity to the team as well as the MLS. He is making a mistake if he plays in Mexico. According to a recent report by the US Department of State, crime has been ocurring at a high rate with kidnapping as well as assaults frequent in Mexico City, Nogales, Cancun, and other places.
It is hoped that Landon Donovan reconsiders his desire or at be informed what he is getting into when he signs the contract with the Mexican League and Club America.
