The Mexican Teams of Cruz Azul faced the Pumas of UNAM for the CONCACAF Champions League at Estadio Azul in Mexico. It was a game that was unforgettable for both teams and the spectators.

The game itself was dominated by Cruz Azul who enjoyed the hometown advantage. Cruz Azul was able to dominate the game with consistency and playing in an organized fasion while the Pumas were unable to respond with vigor to Cruz Azul.

The second half began with a rejuvenated Cruz Azul playing an aggressive football/soccer while Pumas UNAM was weakening. Both teams were still trying to maintain the status quo but within the last minutes of the game, Cruz Azul broke loose with goals by Horacio Cervantes, Adrian Cortes, Rogelio Chavez, and Gerardo Lugo.

 

Horacio Cervantes scored the second goal within 73 minutes on the basis of a corner kick. He hit the ball with his head to increase the lead of Cruz Azul 2-0 Pumas [2-1 on a global scale]. The Cruz Azul Team and fans at Estadio Azul were ecstatic and wanted more goals or at least maintain the advantage.

 

Adrian Cortes was able to take advantage of a weak defense by Sergio Bernal [Pumas UNAM] to score a direct kick into the goal post within 76 minutes and give Cruz Azul a 3 to 0 lead over the Pumas [or a 3-1 global scale]. The goal ocurred after Dario Varon [Pumas UNAM] was expelled for violent behavior towards an opposing player.

 

Rogelio Chavez scored another goal for Cruz Azul by kicking the ball towards the right side of the goal post after one of his players missed it. It ocurred when one of the Cruz Azul players tried to score within the right post. The ball rebounded and Chavez kicked it directly to the right side of the goal post in 83 minutes. The score was Cruz Azul 4-0 Pumas UNAM [4-1 on a global scale].

 

The icing on the cake was the last and fifth goal by Gerardo Lugo for Cruz Azul to the surprise and consternation of Sergio Bernal and the rest of the Pumas UNAM Team. The end of the hopes for Puma UNAM came to a sudden end as Cruz Azul managed to consolidate its hold on the final leg of the CONCACAF Champions League.
