While Liverpool defeats West Ham, there have been a string of criticisms against one of their team members Fernando Torres. Fernando Torres will be undergoing another surgery on his knee which will leave him sidelined for the remaining Premier League Season and little time to train for Spain.
The result have been comments by people who love to gossip and speak ill of others to say that he placed his desire to play for Spain above the interests of Liverpool. The comments are the equivalent of a supervisor at a work area accusing his or her employee of abusing sick leave when he or she was actually sick.
Is it a crime for a person to set the date of his or her surgery in cooperation with their Surgeon? The people who make these comments are not aware of how complex sports medicine [as well as the medical field] can be. We can only imagine that the surgeon and Torres may have set the date of the surgery since the surgeon has other patients.
It was enough that Fernando Torres participated in the Liverpool quarter final match over Benfica. I saw the match on television and it was clear that he was in agony. I would like to issue a challenge to the critics of Torres.
I challenge them to play football/soccer for 85 minutes with the same injury that Torres has and then proceed to play the rest of the Premier League [and UEFA Champions League] game. I also challenge them to play the 2010 World Cup with the same injury.
The reason for my challenge is simple, the people who play football/soccer are flesh and blood like the rest of us. They have injuries that need surgery or rest and relaxation. The football/soccer athletes can become sick just like the rest of us. I hope Fernando Torres recovers in time for the 2010 World Cup.
I also hope that the critics and gossipers come to their senses and think about the human aspect of the sports world.
