Raul Bobadilla has been excluded from the Mexican National Soccer Team because he lied about his parentage. He once declared to the Mexican Press that he was born in Argentina to an Argentine Father and a Mexican Mother. When confronted with the birth certificate, he confessed that his mother was from Argentina.
While it would have been unjust for El Tri to exclude Bobadilla on the basis of his parentage [if he were born in Mexico to one or two Argentine parents], it is of my understanding that the people who are of a national team must either be a national of the country he is playing by naturalization or birth.
In this case, it is about lying in order to participate in a World Cup. Raul Bobadilla could have easily tried out for the Argentine National Soccer Team. If he failed, he could have gone to another team or sit out the 2010 World Cup. Becky Hammon was in a same predicament but she went with the truth.
Becky Hammon once tried out for the US Basketball Olympic team in 2008 and did not pass. She then tried out in Russia, and was accepted into the team with Russian Citizenship. The difference between Becky Hammon and Raul Bobadilla was that she went with the truth.
Raul Bobadilla should have thought about what he was doing before inventing that his mother was from Mexico in order to play for El Tri.
