Cruz Azul Wins First Leg of CONCACAF Champions League

Cruz Azul faced Pachuca in the first part of the CONCACAF Champions League held in Estadio Azul in Mexico. It was an emotional game which left the players and the spectators shouting for more.

The first half started with Cruz Azul dominating the game with their techniques of passing the ball between its players. Pachuca attempted to dominate but appeared to be disoriented in how to play the game.

Emmanuel Villa took advantage of an opening in the Pachuca defense to score the first goal of the game. He kicked the ball with his right foot with a force. The ball went past the Pachuca goal keeper Jose de Jesus Corona and into the center of the goal post to score in 20 minutes.

Pachuca was stunned but attempted to equalize yet they forgot where to score. Maximiliano Biancuchi by Cruz Azul attempted to score another goal with a cross. Carlos Rodriguez of Pachuca was able to deflect the cross but scored for Cruz Azul within 24 minutes.

Carlos Rodriguez was stunned when he realized what he had done but was unable to remedy the situation. Cruz Azul was scoring 2 to 0 against Pachuca and were on the offensive while Pachuca was unable to make a move. It appeared surreal that this was the same Pachuca team that defeated the Columbus Crew in Ohio during a CONCACAF Champions League tournament.

The second half was more exciting with a rejuvenated Pachuca deciding to play for all or nothing. It appeared that both teams were competing for posession of the ball and the game. Cruz Azul began to suffer from overconfidence in its abilities and started making mistakes in their game.

Damian Alvarez took advantage of the mistakes by Cruz Azul to score a goal for Pachuca and surprising the goalkeeper for Cruz Azul  The response by Julio Cesar Rodriguez of Cruz Azul was one of anger. He took out his anger on Jose Torres [who is the Pachuca Midfielder from the USA also known as El Gringo] by extending his leg into Torres groin in a kicking fasion.

The result was that Julio Cesar Rodriguez was expelled from the game. Cruz Azul was left with ten people in the field and the possibility that the second leg may be difficult without Julio Cesar Rodriguez. Cruz Azul managed to remain in the lead in spite of this inconvenience. The substitutions did not help the situation but Cruz Azul managed to hold on to its lead.

Cruz Azul may have won the first leg but the last leg will be on the 28th of April 2010. Cruz Azul lost the 2009 CONCACAF Champions League to Atlante and it cannot afford to repeat the defeat scenario in 2010.
