The Central American country of Honduras was able to classify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup
after surviving heavy competition in the CONCACAF Classification rounds. It was done under the added circumstances of the political turbulence that the world wanted to use in an attempt to submerge Honduras.
Hondurasmanaged to win third place behind Mexico and the United States of America in the classification rounds.Honduras is in Group H with Spain, Switzerland, and Chile which makes the country difficult to predict. The team with the letter H in its T Shirt will be hard pressed to win a victory against Chile, Switzerland and Spain.
The FIFA
Coca Cola World Ranking [as of the 28th of April 2010] Honduras in 40th place with 727 points behind fellow Grouip H countries Spain, Switzerland, and Chile. Spain is in second place in the classification with 1565 points, Chile is in 15th place with 948 points, and Switzerland is 26th place with 854 points..
The team has managed to win 10 games [mostly at home] with 2 draws and 6 losses away. One of the notable exceptions was the loss of Honduras to Venezuela in the Estadio Olimpia located in San Pedro Sula [which is a coastal city in the country]. The loss of Venezuela was one to zero and Venezuela did not even attempt to play a decent game.
Regardless, the H Team was unable to execute a decent game plan which could hurt it in the upcoming preliminary games which will be held in Vienna, Austria. Honduras will face Azerbaijan on the 27th of May 2010, Belarus on the 2nd of June 2010, and Romania on the 5th of June 2010.
The advantage of Honduras in these preliminary games lies in the FIFA Coca Cola World Ranking with the exception of Romania. Romania is in 28th place with 843 points followed by Belarus in 81st place with 397 points, and Azerbaijan in 110th place with 257 points.
Honduras has 32 goals for and 18 goals against with 38 yellow cards as well as one series of yellow card followed by a red card. Carlos Pavon is the teams top scorer with 7 goals with 746 minutes played. Wilson Palacios
is one of the members of the national team well known in England because of his association with the Tottenham Hotspurs.
Porfirio Lobos
who is the President of Honduras has promised his team that he will be in South Africa for their debut game. It remains to be seen what will transpire.
