2010 FIFA World Cup: North Korea and South Korea

The 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa is famous for the presence of the Democratic People’s Republic of Kora [also known as North Korea] and the Republic of Korea [South Korea] competing in the same sporting event. While it remains to be seen whether they will face each other in South Africa, the underwriter once saw on television [while he was in China] the two countries compete and it was funny and serious.

What the underwriter saw on television pales in comparison to what transpired in 2009 when North Korea accused South Korea of poisoning its team during a World Cup Qualifier in 2009. South Korea denied the accusations saying they were baseless. The same accusation was used by North Korea to explain the reason why they did not show up for their qualifying game against Oman.

North Koreamanaged to classify after two games against Iran and Saudi Arabia which ended in a scoreless draw. It was the first time since 1966 [when it was in the FIFA World Cup of that year in England] that they classified. It is in Group G [or the Group of Death] with favorites such as Brazil, Portugal, and the Ivory Coast.

They are expected to play their first game against Brazil and their second game against Portugal. It is expected that Brazil and Portugal will defeat them. The Ivory Coast under Sven Goran Eriksson is expected to defeat North Korea and send it home with no wins. The recent draw against South Africa seems to favor those who have this train of thought.

Jong Chol Min [who is the top scorer for North Korea] has had 169 minutes of play with four goals. The team has had 16 yellow cards and 2 red cards. It has had 8 wins [mostly at home], 6 draws, and 2 losses [away from home]. North Korea in 1966 reached the quarter finals after defeating Italy with one goal. It remains to be seen whether it can happen. Regardless, no team [and that includes North Korea should be underestimated].

South Korea is in Group B against Argentina, Nigeria, and Greece. It has been the host of the 2002 FIFA World Cup with Japan. It has been a presence in previous World Cup tournaments. The first game will be against Greece in which a victory is expected. The next game will be against Argentina under Diego Maradona.

While it is established that Argentina may defeat South Korea, the underwriter is willing to predict that Argentina may receive a surprise because of the overconfidence of Diego Maradona. Nigeria may be the weak spot against South Korea since Nigeria has a strong team and the African country is under pressure to win in the African Continent. Nigeria will defeat South Korea.

Park Ji Sung [who is the top scorer for South Korea] has the most minutes played [984] and is the top scorer with 5 goals.South Korea has had 7 victories, 7 draws, and 0 losses with 22 goals for and 7 against. Whether the scene that was written will be played out remains to be seen but the 2010 FIFA World Cup will be remembered as the time when the two Koreas were in the same World Cup for the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup.
