2010 FIFA World Cup: South Africa

The year 2010 will be remembered as the time an African country hosted the World Cup. South Africa has come a long way in more than 15 years since the end of the apartheid regime in which the White European Minorities dominated society in the country. It is now a host country of the FIFA World Cup and a place of tolerance between the races and ethnic groups.

At the present time, SABC [South African Broadcasting Corporation] and Channel Africa [one of the stations belonging to SABC] as well as other African TV and Radio Stations are broadcasting preparations for the 2010 World Cup. One artists even invented a dance for the event.

South Africa is in Group A with Mexico, France, and Uruguay. In the current FIFA Coca Cola World Ranking for May 2010, South Africa is in 90th place with 369 points behind Mexico, Uruguay, and France. France is in tenth place with 1044 points even though Thierry Henry might or might have not used the hand to score his country’s entry into the World Cup.

Mexico is in 17th place with 936 points while Uruguay is in 18th place with 902 points. South Africa has 2 wins, 1 draw, and 3 losses as well as 5 goals for and five goals against. It has ten yellow cards while Aaron Mokoena has 2 yellow cards followed by a red card.

While the ranking itself would show South Africa at a disadvantage,  the country has a strong possibility of winning the 2010 World Cup.South Africa [otheriwse known as Bafana Bafana] has a Brazilian coach [Carlos Alberto Parreira] who has helped the team form a disciplined and consitent play which was borrrowed from the Brazilian and African style of play. Mr. Parreira has also challenged the South African team to have confidence in itself.

It appears that his techniques have produced results even though South Africa has proved itself worthy even before the arrival of Parreira. Kagisho Dikgacoi has six goals with five hundred and forty minutes played which is the highest in the South African National Football/Soccer Team. While its preliminary game against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea [also known as North Korea] ended in a draw, South Africa defeated Jamaica 2 to 0.

The team is also supported by the people of Africa inside the continent as well as the diaspora. Mexico, Uruguay, and France are still struggling with their teams during their preliminary games. I would like to wish South Africa the best.
