Pumas UNAM 2-0 Cruz Azul

Pumas devoured Cruz Azul in one of the Mexican League games for the first time in 6 years in their home stadium Olimpico Universitario. Marco Antonio Pikolin Palacios and Javier Cortes were instrumental in this important victory.

Marco Antonio Pikolin Palacios surprised the defense of Cruz Azul with a corner kick towards the right side of the goal post to score the first goal in 37 minutes. Javier Cortes did the same thing by using his head in 84 minutes.

The game was totally dominated by Pumas from the beginning with their dexterity and the ability to distribute the ball between themselves. Leandro Augusto was one of the players who managed to help Pumas establish dominance of the game with his discipline and tenacity.

Juan Carlos Cacho also played psychological games of sending the ball in one direction while passing it to a fellow Pumas teammate in a different direction. The result was Cruz Azul being on the defensive but being unable to respond.

Both teams made changes for the second half in the hope of improving their fortunes. It did not help Cruz Azul since Alejandro Palacios was able to deflect an attempted equalizer by Maximiliano Biancucchi using his head.

The game was intense to the point that Ricardo Arellano Nieves (who was the referree) administered yellow cards to both teams on an equal basis. Regardless, the Pumas were doing their best in having Cruz Azul for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert to the delight of their fans.

Guillermo Vasquez who is the coach of the Pumas praised the attitude of his team. He also congratulated the team for playing in an organized and consistent manner like a team. He stated that the Pumas are finally behaving like a team and is promising more surprises in the months to come.

It is surreal to believe that this is the Cruz Azul that is advancing in the Mexican League and the CONCACAF Champions League. Enrique Mesa who is the coach of Cruz Azul was angered and declared that his team deserved their loss secondary to the lack of order and solidarity within the team.

Mr. Mesa was angered that Cruz Azul had a weak defense and allowed the ball to be out in the open. The end result was the Pumas capitalizing on this lapse in the ground left by Cruz Azul.

It appears that even in football/soccer, teams such as Cruz Azul can be great one day and a disaster another.
