The traditional Super Clasico or Clasico de Clasicos (Super Classics or Classic of the Classics) between Chivas of Guadalajara and Club America took place in the Estadio Azteca in Mexico.
The stadium was packed with supporters from both teams and police to make sure that the traditional rivalry does not get out of hand.
The game was played to determine the ranking of one of these two prestigious teams. Chivas of Guadalajara is in 4th place in Group 1 of the Mexican League. Club America is in 3rd place in Group 2.
During the pre match,,both teams prepared themselves for this all important confrontation. Univision prepared a survey in which 5756 people were asked whether they think Chivas of Guadalajara or Club America would win.
Chivas received 53% of the vote or 3058 out of 5756. Club America polled 41% of the vote or 2369 out of 5756. The remaining voters predicted a tie.
The match itself did not produce results of a goal but it was exciting to see both teams apply pressure to each other. Omar Arrelano in the beginning attempted to score for Chivas but the ball was blocked by Guillermo Ochoa who is the goal keeper for Club America.
Club America also attempted to apply pressure on Chivas of Guadalajara but Luis Michel (the goal keeper for Chivas of Guadalajara) was able to deflect the ball and attempts to score by America’s Pardo.
Daniel Montenegro was able to retrieve the ball for America and pass it to Vicente Vuoso but Johnny Magallon surprised the team and was able to recover for Chivas.
Francisco Chacon (the referee) issued a yellow card for misconduct to Miguel Lavun (of Chivas) for the wrong use of the hand during the match even though there was no handball.
Chivas of Guadalajara and Club America may have inspired high expectations without goals but the game itself was great.
The most valued players were the goal keepers Guillermo Ochoa and Luis Michel for their success in being able to block any attempts at goals from both teams. It remains to be seen what will transpire.
