Heather Leigh has just released a second CD Called “Second Chances” and formed a new band called Deja Blue which is jazz oriented. I invited her for another interview and she took time off her busy schedule. The rest is here.
1. How was Deja Blue formed?
I have always loved old school jazz music and even performed for a short
time with a classical guitarist. But I kind of put that on the back
burner when I started writing my own music. But one day I was
approached by a jazz pianist and he wanted to know if I was interested
in starting up a jazz band. Even though I already had a band, I
couldn’t pass up the opportunity to perform jazz and blues. I just
LOVE it!
We hadn’t named ourselves at all until just recently. We got booked for a
huge gig in Leesburg and they wanted to advertise for us……and we
didn’t have a name! So i was driving down to perform in St. Petersburg,
and I saw a sign for «Deja Vu» and and I said, «DEJA BLUE!! That’s it!!!»
2. Have you started to work on a CD with Deja Blue?
Deja Blue hasn’t started any projects just yet. My goal is to start
writing original music for us to perform and record. Right now, we
perform a lot of old 40’s jazz cover tunes.
3. Will you perform with Deja Blue in America and the world?
We are hoping to get performing on a regular basis. Deja Blue is pretty
new, so we are still working on getting our repetoire built up! So if
anyone wants a good jazz band, look us up! (ps-we still need a jazz
drummer if anyone is interested!)
4. How are you able to balance a Jazz Band With A Rock and Country Band?
It is very difficult to keep up with it all! In addition to the two bands,
I have 3 kids, 3 dogs, and a full time job. But just like anything in
life, if it is important to you, you find the time. I am busy
practicing, writing, or performing almost every single night of the
week. Every once in a while, I just have to shut everything down for
the night….no music, no computer, no housework….no nothing….and
just crawl into bed at 7pm and recharge! LOL
5. Will your Jazz Band feature Christian Themes?
Right now, Deja Blue is performing a lot of the jazz standards and
classics by legendary artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.
We also add in some blues and some spirituals as well, but we are
sticking more to a secular theme with Deja Blue.
6. What was the inspiration behind «Second Chances»?
Ahhh…Second Chances. Well, when we were trying to come up with a name
for the band, we were all discussing our second chances in life. Those
times when God did amazing, miraculous things and showed us mercy. It
only seemed right to call the band «Second Chances» After that, I
decided we really needed a theme song! So, I started writing the song
«Second Chances» It’s about letting go of things that hold us back and
grabbing those second chances in life! The other songs on the EP are a
mixture of styles. «You’ll Never Let me Go» is a bluesy tune. «There’s
Somethin’ in the Water» is a bluegrass/southern gospel kinda toe-tappin’
song. «I Will Trust You» is a ballad I wrote when my vocal cord was
paralyzed and I thought I wouldn’t sing again. All the songs on the EP
are meant to encourage and uplift the spirit. To remind us to be kind
to one another and love each other.
7. How long did it take you to record «Second Chances»?
I made all of the music myself, outside of the studio. So we only spent
two days in the studio itself recording all of the vocals. But some of
the songs on «Second Chances» have been years in the making! «What She
Didn’t Know» I have written, thrown away, re-written, and thrown away,
and re-written for a long time! LOL
8. Where can the people who love your music purchase «Second Chances»?
