Dear Friends,
Tomorrow is a very important day for Christians. It is ASH WEDNESDAY and the first day of LENT.
Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, which means «spring.» The season is a preparation for celebrating Easter. Historically, Lent began as a period of fasting and preparation for baptism by converts and then became a time for penance by all Christians.
Ash Wednesday emphasizes a dual encounter: we confront our own mortality and confess our sin before God within the community of faith.
We will gather as the Killian Pines community to observe Ash Wednesday with a brief service at 7:00 pm. We will have the traditional imposition of ashes during the service. Make every effort to join us. Your presence is an encouragement to others as we begin the journey of Lent. It is also a good opportunity to invite someone to visit for the first time. If you have never participated in an Ash Wednesday service, you’ll find it deeply moving and transforming.
Prior to the Ash Wednesday service, at 6:00 pm we will enjoy fellowship and a delicious pancake dinner prepared by Rev. Janet Horman.
Peace and Grace on the journey!
