I had the honor of attending the El Clasico FC Barcelona VS Real Madrid televised match live at the Fritz and Fran Bierhaus in Coral Gables, Florida. The date of the match was December 10, 2011 and the restaurant was packed with people mostly FC Barcelona supporters.
The first half got to a start with the FC Barcelona and Real Madrid supporters hoping for the best. The best was yet to come in this El Clasico match that made history.
The people were worried when Benzema scored the first goal within minutes of the start of El Clasico. The Barca fans [including myself] were worried while a small group of Real Madrid supporters with Ronaldo shirts were celebrating prematurely.
The people were worried with Real Madrid scoring another goal and I was afraid of the same thing. The emotions were switched at the end of the first half with an equalizer by Alexis Sanchez with some assistance from Lionel Messi.
The Barca crowd [myself included] started shaking hands with each other, unfurling their banners, and singing the Barca anthem. The half time was a time of rest and reflection for the supporters of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
The Real Madrid supporters were worried while Barca expressed hope of a victory. One Barca supporter asked me the question of which team will win and by how many points.
My response was that Barca would defeat Real Madrid with the results being three to one. My reason was that Ronaldo missed some opportunities for scoring and Barca took advantage of it.
The people around me heard the comments and said: “We will see but there is hope”. The second half started with the Barca supporters feeling upbeat about the match.
I was also expressing high hopes for Barca as well. The people jumped for joy, unfurled their banners, took photos, and sang the anthem of FC Barcelona when Xavi Hernandez and Cesc Fabregas scored the winning goals.
The people also stood on the chairs and screamed “Barca Barca Barca!!!!!!!” when our team advanced in this match. The Real Madrid supporters were leaving early while I was feeling serene after the two goals by Hernandez and Fabregas.
The end of the match was what I predicted and many of the Barca supporters celebrated the victory and my prediction. The celebration was marked with the people shaking hands in celebration and flying the banners of Barca.
The moment of El Clasico was unforgettable although it would be great to one day see it in person.
