Vanessa Peters released «The Burn, The Turth, The Lies» to the public and it is a sensation. A decision was made to invite Ms. Peters [and she accepted] to be interviewed in the Alvarez-Galloso News Hour. The interview was conducted via E Mail and the rest is pure and solid gold.
1. What was the inspiration behind Vanessa Peters The Burn, The Truth, The Lies?
The title of the album came from the song «The Sting,» which is one of my favorite ones on the album. It’s about how hard it it is sometimes to define what the truth really is. It’s like when two people tell a story about the same event. They will both remember different details and tell the story a little bit differently. Neither one is lying – they just have different truths about the way things happened.
2. How long did it take you to record the album?
We started working on the album in September of 2011, but then we had to take a break for a few months while we were touring. We started on it again in January 2012, then another break for touring, and then finally we were able to wrap it up between March-May 2012. It always takes longer than you expect it to, especially when there are shows to play. Everyone in the band is pretty busy with other side projects as well, so sometimes it is hard to get all of us together.
3. You wrote the music and lyrics for The Burn, The Truth, The Lies. What inspires you to write the words and lyrics to your songs?
Everything! I get inspired by watching people on trains, in airports, walking down the street. I like to see people and then try to see into them, to imagine what their life and character is like. I’m fascinated by their stories.
4. How does it feel recording your first solo album after ICOM [Ice Cream On Mondays]?
It was definitely different. I miss working with ICOM – they were a fantastic band. But I am lucky to have found another group of guys that are very inspirational and very easy to work with. This was a solo album, but they definitely left their mark on the songs, and I am happy that we all collaborated on the record together.
5. Will you perform within North America and Europe to promote your album?
As much as possible, yes! We are about to tour in Italy in July, and then we will do some shows in America in the fall. I am hoping to return to Europe in 2013 as well. It’s hard to keep a band on the road but we are going to play as many shows as possible.
6. How was it like to raise money from Kickstarter to record this album and would you do it again?
Kickstarter was a fun and easy platform to work with. I have always raised money for my albums by doing pre-sales and what not, so this was similar to how I have done it in the past, but it gave us much more visibility and helped us reach new listeners. I would definitely do it again.
7. Will you ever record a Vinyl disc of Vanessa Peters The Burn The Truth The Lies?
I am not sure. If there’s enough demand, sure.
8. Where can the Vanessa Peters fan buy your latest album?
Online, everywhere – Bandcamp, iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, my website.
In stores – right now, mostly just in Texas, but hopefully we’ll get into some other good indie music stores across the country soon.
9. I was hoping that «Change Your Disguise» would be in the album. Will the song be included in a future album or MP3?
Absolutely. Maybe even later this year.
10. What is your message to the world?
To be kind to one another. We’re all in such a hurry, all the time… sometimes it’s difficult to remember that everyone around you is struggling just like you are, and a little bit of compassion and understanding goes a long way.
I would like to thank you for your time and for the interview. My best wishes to you in this new album which has served as an inspiration to many people. I also want to thank the public for reading the interview and listening to Vanessa Peters on CD or live.
