“One of Us”

In English we call the deity God, but in every language we find words that attempt to describe the divinity. Back in 1995 Joan Osborne popularized the song “One of Us.” I liked it because it asked what I consider important questions that often are not considered in religious circles. Questions such as: what if God is one of us; does God have a name other than God; and does God have a face? You might not be familiar with this song and if you do, you might think it is irreverent. As far as I know, Osborne is not a clergyperson, but her popular song spoke to millions around the world. The refrain talks about God riding the bus just like any of us. To me this is a reminder that God can be found in the most common and mundane of places and not just in a worship service of organized religion. If you don’t ride the bus, take a look inside your car. Who knows, you might find God there too. Thanks Ms Osborne for reminding us that God is closer than we know. Think about it!
