“Plum Line”

I find it difficult to imagine a tool so simple as the plum line.  Plum lines have been in use by brick masons for centuries. Early builders realized that if walls were going to stand firm and hold the weigh placed above them, those wall had to be perfectly vertical. This tool consists of nothing more than a piece of string with a heavy object at the end. Amos lived in the first half of the eighth century before the birth of Christ. He lived in Tekoa, a small village in Judah and worked as a farmer and herder. Then Amos had a vision. The Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plum line, with a plum line in his hand. (Amos 6: 7-8)  Often times the “visions” that are given to us come veiled in symbols and it is up to each of us to discern their meaning. God has different ways to reveal his purposes to each of us and invariably a response is required. While you think about your own task, ponder the builder’s tool and place it against the wall of your life.
