I enjoy traveling alone, but this is not a good idea. No one should travel alone in life. Most of us are now well into our spiritual quests and may not be aware of others helping along the way. The Christian gospels tell us about a day when Jesus and his disciples found themselves in the midst of a sudden and fierce storm in the Sea of Galilee. (Mark 4:35-41) We can go from employment to unemployment, relationship to loneliness, health to illness, calm to chaos, life to death in a matter of seconds. It is in times like these that we need faithful spiritual companions who can help us regain a sense of direction, perspective and courage to trust God and press on forward. If you are in a relatively calm period of your life, now is a good time to identify and develop your spiritual friendships. Some of the marks of good companions for the journey are faith, creativity, confidence, dependability, patience, kindness, joy, inner peace and love. The disciples were terrified of the storm while their Lord slept peacefully. The best spiritual friend is the one who lets you embrace your deepest fears, but stands by to offer support. James Taylor sang : “If the sky above you, should turn dark and full of clouds, and that old north wind should begin to blow, keep your head together and call my name out loud, yeah soon I’ll be knocking upon your door.” Call on your soul friends when the wind blows hard and be sure The Lord is on top of your contact list. Keep your head and heart together. Ain’t it good to know you’ve got a friend?
